I think I might just be controversial at this point. I dont think one can define what a 'useful' post is. One's definition of 'useful' might not necessarily acceed with another persons. I also dont think one can implicate their view point unto anyone else. Also, usefulness of a post according to me is circumstantial.

However, I do think that the posts in this forum should be postive and constructive. Not that I am saying they havent been. I think this is an issue that the moderators need to sort out. How much of a general banter is allowed? From my experience, any discussion is bound to transgress into something completely unrelated. I believe that it is the moderators role within the forum to focus the discussion back to the orignal issue at hand. This can be done by perhaps a subtle and congenial reminder of the main issue being discussed, or perhaps a private pm to the person if all else fails. The moderator can also bring up a new view point to discuss or ask members what else they can contribute to the discussion.

I get what you're saying. The idea of useful differs from person to person, which was the beginning of the disagreement. I just wanted people's idea of what useful means. I know that your idea of useful might be different from mine, but keeping the purpose and nature of the forum in mind, I'd like to know what you think useful is.

I dont think I can tell you what a 'useful' post is. It is entirely circumstantial even on an individual basis!

As I have mentioned in the previous posts, I think the posts should be constructive and positive, be relevant and should contribute to the discussion.

Arguably, how relevant, postive and contributory a post is or should be is again circumstantial.

well, if you have no idea what constitutes a useful post, don't you think you'd better not say anything as that's the subject under discussion?

The purpose of creating this thread was not to see how long it would go on, or if it would go on well, but to learn what people think is a useful post. This would serve as a guideline for anyone who cares to post anything. Everyone would know what people want to read and what they don't. I think we're getting somewhere...If you don't think so...your opinion, your entitled to it. :)
