FOUR hundred sportsmen and women are expected to participate in the International Umoja Sports Festival organised by the Khoja Shia Ithanaasheri Jamaats of Africa scheduled to be held from December 21 to 26 in Dar es Salaam.
The Chairman of the Umoja Sports festival who are hosting the event under the umbrella of Khoja Shia Ithanaasheri Jamaats of Dar es Salaam, Safderali Jaffer, revealed yesterday in Dar es Salaam that the event which will involve about seven games will engage community teams from USA, United Kingdom, Canada, India, Pakistan and Dubai.
He said other teams will be coming from Madagascar, Kenya, Uganda and the hosts Tanzania who will be represented by teams from Arusha, Moshi, Songea, Lindi, Morogoro, Mwanza and Dar es Salaam.
The event will take place at the Gymkhana; Lugalo barracks golf course, Anadil Burhani, Al Muntazir School and Karume complex. Participants will compete in football, volleyball, cricket, tennis, squash, golf and table tennis.
In football event there will be the normal game and the seven a side football which will take place at night at the Al Muntazir grounds.
According to Jaffer, the event, apart from fulfilling sports competition, will open doors for mutual understanding and enhance a sense of brotherhood among the participating countries.
The event will also be attended by the President of the World Federation of the Khoja Shia Ithanaasheri community, Al Haj Ahmed Hassam from the United Kingdom who will be the chief guest during the closing ceremony on December 26.
