I was sent two booklets, written by the same person (whom I dont know).

Both books are written in the same style. The author mixes random ayats of the Quran and Hadith relating to mostly Zakat and in between talks about poverty in an emotional way.

In one of those books I came across the following paragraph:
Caution on Blind Taqlid?
Let us now examine the verse 09:31 of the Quran. It reads partly:
“They are taking their Rabbis and their Monks as lords besides
Allah……….”
Now a pertinent Hadith: (It has been narrated) from Abu Ja’far (a.s)
regarding the Words of Allah swt the Exalted: “They are taking their
Rabbis and their Monks as lords besides Allah [09:31], he said: ‘By
Allah! Neither did they (people) pray Salat to them, nor Fast, but they
obeyed them in disobedience to Allah swt.” (244/246 Al Mahaasin).
Similar Ahadith in respect of the same verse are reported in Jamee’al
Bayan, 37:5, Al Kafi V.2 Ch.169, H7 and Tafseer’ul Qummi L.289.
Question: Is not the Verse ‘significant’ as a caution to the Believers
by the mention of the “Blind Taqlid” made of the Scholars by Ahlul
Kitab?
The mention of this Blind Taqlid in this Verse is in the form of a
caution to Muslims; it cannot be deemed ‘speculative’ when it comes
from Allah swt but an indication of it happening with us also -- with
‘certainty’.
The above criticism of the Marja seems to stem from the authors understanding that zakaat should be payable on wealth while the Marja's specify which items zakaat is payable on.

anyone with more info or guidance on this issue?

Let me know if i should attach the two booklets...but please read them with a pinch of salt. to me it looks like emotional propaganda

Perhaps this topic may interest you. It also has a video in which Sheikh Alidina clarifies the fiqh of Zakaat and answers some of the 'concerns' raised

The author claims that zakaat is mentioned concurrently with salaat in the Holy Quran but we may not end up paying zakaat our entire lives and instead give more importance to khums which has been mentioned only once in the Holy Quran.

Seems like a good argument
