Greed and Lying Lead to Harm- A Lesson from our 11th Imam

Image

During the time of our 11th Imam, Imam Hasan al-Askari (a.s.), there lived a man whose name was Ismail, who was quite miserly. Although Ismail had some money saved, he was scared about what he was going to do when the money was finished. He, therefore, decided to dig a hole and hide the money there.

Once, when our 11th Imam was passing by, Ismail said to the Imam that he had no money and asked if the Imam would help him. The Imam (a.s.) immediately replied, “You have buried 200 dinars, yet you claim to have nothing?” Ismail lied and said he had not done such a thing. The Imam gave him some money and told him that the Imams always help anyone who asks them for help and there was no need for him to lie. Imam also said that one should be grateful for whatever Allah has given him.

As the Imam (a.s.) was leaving, he informed Ismail that he will not find the money where he had hidden it. Later, when Ismail did go to get the money, he realized that the money had been discovered by his son who had taken it away!

Greed and Lying only lead to Ismail’s own destruction and damage!
