The 19th night of Ramadhan - A sad night for Shias.
On the morning of the 19th of Mahe Ramadhan, 40 A.H., Imam Ali (A.S) went to Masjide Kufa to say his prayers. While in sajdah of the first rak'ah, he was struck on the head with a poisoned sword.
This henious act was carried out by Abdur Rahman bin Muljim, a kharijite who had plotted with others to kill Imam (A.S). The assasin was caught and brought to Imam (A.S) by the muslims in the masjid. The fatal blow of Ibne Muljim would have tragic consequences. Imam (A.S) was taken home by his sons where he lay in agony for two days.
Words of Imam Ali (A.S) after the fatal blow:-
"I have succeeded, by the lord of the Ka'abah".
(after sprinkling some dust on his wound):-
'From it (the earth) We have created you, to it We shall return you, and from it We shall take you out once again' (Holy Qur'an 20:55).
Beware! Do not kill any on account of me except my killer. Wait till I die with his existing stroke. Then strike him with one stroke, and do not dismember the limbs of the man for I have heard the Prophet (S.A.W) say,
"Avoid cutting limbs even though it may be a rabid dog".
