The physiological effect of fasting includes lowering of blood sugar, lowering of cholesterol and lowering of the systolic blood pressure.

In fact, Ramadan fasting would be an ideal recommendation for treatment of mild to moderate, stable, non-insulin diabetes, obesity and essential hypertension.

Experts have also found that restricting food intake during the day can help prevent health problems such as high cholesterol, heart disease and obesity, as well as improve mental health and wellbeing.

The act of fasting is meant to remind Muslims of the less fortunate and to reinforce the need to be thankful. As one of the pillars, or duties, of Islam, fasting during the month of Ramadan is mandatory for all healthy adult Muslims.

Muslims believe that Ramadan teaches them to practice self-discipline, self-control, sacrifice, and empathy for those who are less fortunate, thus encouraging actions of generosity and compulsory charity (zakat).

Ramadan develops spiritual, social and moral values. During this time the poor are given attention and charity, and faith led neighbourhoods practice hospitality. Fasting aims to establish equality between the rich and poor, as the rich experience hunger and learn to show respect and appreciate the less fortunate..
