I thought India was the second fastest growing economy in the world today after China? So who is the second if it’s not India?
In-terms of it being a life saver or an earth destroyer an argument for sustained double digit growth is that if India continues growing at the pace it is at the moment, millions of people will be lifted from poverty. Now why should these emerging economies, i.e. India and China be concerned about the environment when the west had continues growth over the past 200 years without concern for the environment. Now obviously the counter argument to that is, if nothings done about the environment NOW then there won’t be a habitable earth left. So a balance must be struck and I am leaning towards the environment here, but I am concerned policy makers in India and China are leaning towards growth.
The gap between the rich and poor is a sad fact of most capitalist economies, but this is where the welfare state kicks in. The Government with its increased revenues should invest in poor communities to lift them out of poverty and give them an opportunity to do good for themselves. India certainly is trying to achieve this but the government’s critics say it’s not enough. You would be forgiven for thinking no such problems should exist in China, it being a communist state and all. No where in the world is the gap between the rich and poor growing faster than in China at the moment and government is doing little to counter this. It’s a sad fact that the only successful communist regime in the world is not following strict communist principles.
Tanzania is lagging behind for many reasons. Education, infrastructure, corruption, these are but a few potent reasons why we don’t see growth at the levels seen in India and China. This is not to say we cannot achieve such growth rates, certainly market friendly polices by the Mkapa and Kikwete governments have helped a lot in sustaining the growth levels we are seeing the moment but more needs to be done.
