Heard in an Islamic lecture/majaalis on HAADI or HIDAYAT channel that smoking for a period of one year can lead to harmful lasting after effects for a period of TEN YEARS. Imagine how disastrous smoking is .

Nah, there are effects, but not that extreme. It is believed (after studies, of course) that if a smoker quits smoking and remains a non-smoker for a period of 2 years, his risk of the bad things that happen to smokers go back to normal, background, never-smoked-a=cigarette-in-my-life levels.
